Gerald "Gary" Gene Shade, 86, passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at Green Acres of Lowell, MI. Born to Ernest and Vera (Gegner) Shade in Hillsboro, IN, Gary received his diploma from Hillsboro High School (1950), served proudly in the US Air Force during the Korean War, and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Purdue University (1958). Gary enjoyed careers in agricultural sales as well as at the US Postal Service, and was a dedicated husband and father. He was married to Barbara Ann (Ziegler) Shade on May 28th, 1954 in Indianapolis and their marriage was filled with the joys of raising children, providing an in-home daycare for the community, and welcoming many grandchildren. Gary was a devoted, loving, and patient caretaker for his wife each day until her passing.
Gary loved spending time with his family and enjoyed camping, golfing, Purdue sports, fishing, sweets, and had a sparkle in his eye when encountering young children. He always had a way of making people feel warm and welcome, and loved to tell his visitors, "thanks for stopping by!" Gary was a strong man of faith and always devoted time to serving and participating in churches in the communities where he resided. He had a song in his heart and frequently could be found drumming out a beat on the table or humming along. He had giant but gentle hands to go with his giant and gentle heart, and he had a way of bringing joy and laughter to those around him.
Preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Shade. Survived by sister Lillian Davidson of Crawfordsville, IN; sister-in-law Judy O'Neil of Indianapolis, IN; children Stuart (Lynda) Shade of Fishers, IN; Linda (Gerald) Huisman of Lowell, MI; David Shade of Noblesville, IN; grandchildren Ashley Shade, Brennan (Maggie) Huisman, Brittany Huisman, Nathan (Laura) Huisman, Taylor (Ryan) O'Hern, Devon (Heather) Huisman, Cameron (Kristina) Huisman, Christian Huisman; soon to be 13 great-grandchildren; additionally loved by special nieces and nephews.
