George Alan VanderHaag, age 79, of Sand Lake, Michigan passed went to be home with the Lord Jesus Sunday June 18, 2023 with his family by his side. George was born on September 9, 1943 in Grant, Michigan to Jake & Anna (Longcore) VanderHaag.
George was very active with the Sand Lake (and later Howard City) VFW's as he was a proud Vietnam Veteran. Also Known as Banana Sam, he spent almost 60 Years selling produce at roadside stands, and flea markets from Shipshewana, Indiana to Grand Marais ,Michigan.
George was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Albert, and Jerry, and longtime companion Anne Fox.
George is survived by his brothers; Fred (Joyce) of Grand Rapids, Claire (Honey) of Arizona, his sister Bonnie (Doug) Quick of Georgia, 2 sons David & Jeff of Angola Indiana, daughter Deborah Benson of Sand Lake , step daughter Carolyn (Greg) Wagner of Morley, and his grandsons Brock, and Jason Benson of Sand Lake.
Memorial Visitation is from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 26, 2023, at Community Church 747 E 104th St, Grant, MI 49327 where Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m.
Burial will then take place at 12:30 pm at Hillside Cemetery with military honors, located at 2110 E 128th St, Grant, MI 49327 (at the intersection of E 128th St and Catalpa Ave).
There will be a luncheon afterwards at the American Legion, 91 S. 1st St., Cedar Springs, Michigan.
