George Meade

George Andrew Meade, Jr., age 74, of Greenville, passed away Sunday, September 5, 2010 at Spectrum Health-Blodgett Hospital in East Grand Rapids. The son of Pearl (Jerrel) and George Andrew Meade, Sr., he was born on September 17, 1935 in Ashland, Kentucky. Growing up during the Great Depression instilled a great deal of ambition in George and he spent most of his working years as a iron worker helping in the erection of major construction and civil engineering projects throughout the mid-west. In 1997 he completed his high school diploma and was a proud graduate of Greenvilles adult education program. In 1998 he married the former Mary E. (Hansen) Sculley and they made their home on Marys parents farm. He was a member of Ironworkers Local No. 25 and had been active in the Masonic fraternity. In recent years he enjoyed welding, collecting die-cast models, and was a member of the Turk Lake United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his only brother, Robert Meade. Surviving are his wife, Mary E. Meade of Greenville; his children, George (Cheryl) Meade III, John (Tammy) Meade, all of Taylor, Richard (Joy) Meade of Florida, Marilyn (Darrill) Scroggin of Jackson, Melinda (Shawn) Justice of Grass Lake, and Donald (Cheryl) Meade of Taylor; Marys children, Jim (Mary) Sculley of Little Rock, Arkansas, Peter (Cheryl) Sculley of Rising Fawn, Georgia, and Mark (Suzan) Sculley of Berville; twenty-three grandchildren; and thirty-one great grandchildren. Visitation is Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Christiansen Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where envelopes for memorial contributions will be available. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at Turk Lake United Methodist Church, 8900 W. Colby Road off of M-91, with Pastor Kay Welsch officiating.
