Life Story: George grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and was always a proud Yooper. “Once a Yooper, always a Yooper.” George graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1965. He furthered his education by getting master’s degrees in history and public administration from Western Michigan University during his working career. During college while working on Isle Royale National Park in the summers, he met Bette Rohner. They were married June 26, 1966 and this started their wonderful 59-year marriage. He started his career at the Fort Custer job core in Battle Creek, MI. From there he went on to teach in the Kalamazoo public school system for 31 years. George and Bette retired in 1997 to continue their life-long pursuit of travel and adventure.
George had many hobbies. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and LOVED to tell the stories! He and Bette enjoyed travelling both during their working years and all throughout their retirement. George was also into biking, hiking, canoeing, photography, skiing, staying active throughout every season of the year. And let’s be honest, he was into whatever Bette or his family wanted to do. George and Bette spent many wonderful years during the winters on Sanibel Island in Florida and made many life-long friends. George also loved his family and was active in the boys’ lives coaching sports, taking family trips and enjoying many hunting adventures in Michigan, South Dakota, Colorado and Utah.
Family: George is survived by his wife, Bette, and two sons Mitch and Derek and grandchildren, Kailyn, Alex, Lucas, and Kiara. George will now join his mother, Florence, his father, Clarence and his brother, Bob, in heaven.
