Mr. Eugene B. "Gene" Sherrick, age 83, of Greenville, passed away Sunday morning, December 13, 2009 at his daughter's home in Clarksville, Tennessee with his family at his side. The son of Gilbert & Alberta (Moyer) Sherrick, he was born on May 19, 1926 in Van Wert, Ohio.
A veteran of World War II, Gene proudly served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of both the Ray I. Booth American Legion and the Cleveland-Wolverton Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Greenville.
Following the war, he married the former Gloria Jean Spyker on June 1, 1946 in Cridersville, Ohio. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage, raised two children, and made their home in Greenville where they enjoyed square dancing, bowling, and golfing.
For over 50 years, Gene worked as a union electrician, alongside his brother Don, and was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Sherrick; a grandson, Anthony Eugene Sherrick; a sister, Joetta Thome; and his wife, Jean Sherrick on July 30, 2008.
Surviving are his two children, Diana Lynn Richardson of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Gilbert E. "Gib" Sherrick of Cedar Springs; three granddaughters, Lisa & Scott Haislip of Rockvale, Tennessee, Dena & Rex Davis of Bell Buckle, Tennessee, and Christine & Kirk Medlar of Grattan; six great grandchildren, Ashley & Jeremy Gannon, Katie Davis, Austin Davis, Jennifer & Dustin Guldin, Avery Medlar, and Jordan Medlar; five great-great grandchildren, Colin Gannon, Cammie Gannon, Cooper Gannon born Nov. 28, 2009, Alaysia Davis, and Gracyn Gloria Noel Guldin; a brother, Don Sherrick of Greenville; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Glennis Jensen of Arizona, Jenny & Buster Vasher of Harrison, Sandy Quist, Shirley Johnson, and Norm Thome, all of Greenville; a brother-in, Ronald & Betty Spyker of Wapakoneta, Ohio; and many, many nieces and nephews.
Visitation is on Thursday from 12 Noon to 2:00 p.m at the Christiansen Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Jerry Jones, pastor of the First Congregational Church, will officiate with military honors rendered by the Ray I. Booth American Legion Post 101 concluding the ceremonies.
A luncheon will follow and burial will take place privately at Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. Memorial contributions are suggested to either the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), the Greenville American Legion Post, or to Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
