Eugene A. Custer, age 82, formerly of Lansing, St. Johns, and Rock Lake (Vestaburg), passed into Glory on Thursday, April 21, 2011 in Grand Rapids.
The son of Donald & Olive (DeBoer) Custer, he was born in Lansing on April 24, 1928 and was a graduate of Everett High School, Lansing. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he then worked and retired from Michigan State University, East Lansing.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kate (Hartsell) Custer; his beloved parents; a sister, Marlene Terburg; and a sister-in-law, Nettie Custer.
Surviving are his sons, Larry (Vicki) Custer of Grand Rapids, and their four children and two great-grandsons, and Doug (Yvonne) Custer of Lansing; a brother, Wayne Custer of Vestaburg, eight nieces and nephews and their families, and the Hartsell family.
Visitation is Monday, April 25th from 12-1 p.m. in the chapel of the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, 3000 Monroe Ave. N.E., Grand Rapids, MI 49505, where funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. with military honors rendered by the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. Pastor Dean Wheeler of Ressurrection Life Church will officiate and burial will take place privately in the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans Cemetery.
