Elsie Owings

March 12, 1953 — December 3, 2024

On December 3rd, 2024, Elsie Anne Owings, known for her wicked sense of dry humor, a heart that knew no bounds, and a penchant for saving anything with a pulse, decided that she had enough of our shenanigans here on Earth and was called to the great bowling alley in the sky. Born in Muskegon, MI, on March 12th, 1953, Elsie lived a life filled with compassion, humility, dedication, and an intelligence that could put Einstein to shame. Elsie, whose maiden name was Freye, spent her career as a landscaper, but she was anything but garden-variety. She had a knack for seeing the beauty in everything around her, whether it was a backyard filled w brambles or the angry stray in her field. After retiring early due to CFS, she found a new way to channel her passion. She began weaving her tales into columns for the local paper in Wayland, Michigan, and later, into books. As Mark Twain once said, "The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one." Elsie was almost finished with her third book when she decided to leave us in suspense and check out what the afterlife has to offer. True to her compassionate nature, Elsie loved all creatures great and small. Dogs, cats, seagulls – even a parched spider once received life-saving droplets of water from her. Her love for animals was only surpassed by the love she had for her family. Elsie leaves behind her devoted husband, Gary Owings, her unofficial nieces, Katrina and Anna Kochin. She is preceded in death by her parents, Elsie and Richard Freye and her long-time canine companion, Lucky. As we bid farewell to Elsie, we remember her not only as a humble, dedicated woman, but also as someone who lived her life with a dash of wit and a whole lot of love. Elsie would want us to remember her by a quote from a poem she wrote, "Let me not dismay o'er the length of flight; let me live the life of a firefly." So, as we remember Elsie, let's share a smile, a story, or a photo on her memorial page. Let's continue her legacy of love and laughter by sharing our favorite memories of her. After all, she'd hate for us to make a fuss.
