Eleanor C. Avery, age 90, formerly of Greenville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 under the loving care of her family and Hospice of Michigan. The daughter of Ben & Blanche (Smith) Salyer, she was born on June 29, 1933 in White Cloud.
On December 22, 1951, in Spencer Township, she married John Avery and together they raised eight children, where members of the former Church of the Rock Assembly of God in Greenville, and enjoyed 51 years of marriage until John passed away on March 24, 2003.
A devoted wife and mother, Eleanor also worked outside the home at the former Gibson Refrigerator Company and retired after 22 years of service. For many years, she attended the Family Life Center Church of God in Belding, the Living Faith Family Church in Greenville, and more recently the Christian Life Center in Spring Lake. Eleanor enjoyed gardening and her flowers, sewing, embroidery and crocheting, coloring, and delighted in hymn sings and listening to the Gaither’s, but found her greatest joy in time spent with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Avery, Sr.; two sons, John Avery, Jr. and Robert Avery; two grandchildren, Tracy Sue Krick and Michael Poe; four sisters, Evelyn Salyer, Leona Salyer, Dorothy Jones, and Irene Hamblin; and three brothers, Wilbur Salyer, Elroy Salyer and Donald Salyer.
Surviving are her children, Betty & Robert Krick, Sr., Bonnie & Charles Staffen, Joyce & Roger Poe, Connie & Wayne Jarvis, Carol & Jeffrey Johnson, and Patty & Duane Kroesing; twenty-two grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation is from 12-1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at Christiansen’s Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Rev. Lynda Dyke, pastor of Living Faith Family Church, and the Rev. William Overton, pastor of the Family Life Center Church of God, will officiate and burial will follow at East Nelson Cemetery near Cedar Springs.
