Eileen McClintock Steiner Winkler's journey started near the end of WWI when an ambulance driver and captain of the Canadian soccer team fell in love and married the most beautiful girl in Surrey, England. Eileen was born in England, February 4,1919, and died peacefully 101 years later on Dec. 1, at Holland Home surrounded by her loving family.
Eileen was raised in Sarnia, Ontario and married an American, Lawrence Steiner. They resided in Port Huron, Michigan then moved to Birmingham, where they raised their four children. Eileen was preceded in death by her beloved son, James (Carole Steiner) in 2002. She is survived by her son, Dick Steiner (Gail Barnicz), and daughters, Linda Dodge (Jim Dodge, dec.) and Nancy Briggs (John Briggs, dec.).
At the age of 40 she returned to school to earn a LPN degree at Harper Hospital. She worked at Beaumont and Muskegon Hospitals into her retirement years. Eileen moved to Spring Lake with her second husband, Leslie Winkler (dec.) and added a new wing to the family of Mary, David and Christopher Winkler (Sherrie).
In Spring Lake, she reveled in being near the water, immersed herself in church and Tri-City Garden Club in Grand Haven. Eileen was a hospice volunteer and Stephens minister. She also had a great sense of fun and once proudly led a fourth of July lake parade dressed was the statue of liberty! She traveled in Europe and Africa and renewed her family roots in England.
She is survived by grand children, Michael and Steven Corell (Kelly), Meredith Steiner (Anthony Hoang) and Robert Steiner (Amy ), Christian and Tyler Briggs, and Tamara Gissendaner (Scott), Heather Douglas, and Jen Shaneburger (Jim). She was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Atticus, Holden, and Daniel Corell, James and Griffen Steiner, Sam and Stella Hoang, and Drew, Sabrina, Jenna and Devin Gissendaner.; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Eileen had an enduring love for life, learning and new experiences. A favorite quote was "Isn't this fun, kids?!" Her cheerful countenance, love for gatherings and music will be remembered.
There will be a celebration of life next summer in her honor. Donations can be sent to Fredrick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park where we can commemorate her love for people, the outdoors and an exuberant life.
