Edward Gmiter

March 14, 1923 — July 10, 2014

Edward F. Gmiter, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday July 10, 2014 with family by his side. The son of John & Anna (Palko) Gmiter, he was born on March 14, 1923 in Monarch, PA. Ed proudly served his county in the U.S. Navy in 1943-1946 during WWII. Ed had a long and dedicated career in the shoe business and was highly respected nationally and internationally for his work and designs. He worked for 19 years with Wolverine World Wide in the corporate headquarters in Rockford, MI. His passion for golf will continue on some of the greenest fairways you can imagine. He was Preceded in death by his Parents; his son, Marc Gmiter; and six siblings. Ed is survived by his wife, Susan of 32 years; Children Andrea (Matthew) Uphold of PA., Geoffrey (April) Beckwith of CA., Michelle (Bradley) Horton of Portage, MI., and daughter in-law Betsy (Matt) Borden-Mercado of Greenville, MI., his sister Bernadette (Joe) Pompura of PA., brother in-law Roy (Bard) Welch of Gowen, MI., sister in-law Peggy (John) VanderWoude of Ada, MI. and sister in-law Barbie (John) Skukalek of Grand Rapids, MI., 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. In Ed's memory, to all of the ladies treat yourself to a great pair of shoes, and to all of the men play a round and toast with his favorite 18 yr. Honoring Ed's wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service with full military honors being held at Ft. Custer National Cemetery on Friday, August 1st at 2 pm.
