Duane “Tom” Thomas McBride, age 85, of Wayland, Michigan, went to be with his Lord on Friday, May 31, 2024. He was born May 24, 1939, in Grand Rapids, MI to the late Howard and Alice (Fitzgerald) McBride.
Tom graduated from Kellogsville High School with the class of 1957, and went on to further his education at Grand Rapids Junior College after receiving a scholarship. Tom married the love of his life, Helen Jean De Roos on August 14, 1959, in Grand Rapids. They celebrated nearly 65 years of marriage together and raised their 3 children. Tom worked and attended trade school for four years through Delta Electric. In 1967 he started Helco Electric which he owned and operated up until his retirement in 2010.
Tom enjoyed coaching his children’s youth sports teams, umping baseball, and refereeing basketball; he was an avid Michigan State University fan. He had an immense passion for old cars and would purchase and restore them. Tom was a member of various car clubs and loved going to shows. He enjoyed traveling with Helen and the kids all over North and South America. In his later years he loved spending time with his family and friends and doing puzzles.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; three children, Brian (Erin Carpenter) McBride, Marcia (Mike) Schierbeek, and Tamela (Larry) Kneibel; seven grandchildren, Renae (Lee) Hackley, Keith (Carmen) Schierbeek, Brent (Caryn) Schierbeek, Nick (Katelyn) McBride, Morgan (Brent) Raedeke, Stacy Shimp, and Evan Shimp; twelve great-grandchildren, Mason and Quincy Hackley, Violet, Theo, and Autumn Schierbeek, Ava and Ivy Schierbeek, Addy, Sawyer, and Liam McBride, and Brooks and Navy Raedeke; brother, Edward “Ken” (Marge) McBride; sisters-in-law, Dora Werkema and Carol Eisenlohr; brother-in-law, Bill (Sue) De Roos; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Howard “Rex” (Ann) McBride and Jon “Gordon” (Phyllis) McBride.
Gathering of family and friends will take place on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Gun Lake Community Church, 12200 M-179, Wayland, MI 49348. A memorial service will be celebrated at the church on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. with Pastor Dan Beyer officiating.
