Duane Brown

June 13, 1951 — November 5, 2023

On November 5, 2023, the world lost a quite remarkable man. Duane Thomas “Thom” Brown, born on June 13, 1951, was a man who loved deeply, worked diligently, and lived with a rare sense of passion and purpose. A native of Independence, MO, and resided in Grand Rapids, Michigan for many years. His warm, welcoming presence was a comfort to those fortunate enough to have known him. Thom was a man of many talents. As a Surgical Technician at Mercy Health St. Mary's, he dedicated over 30 years of his life to helping others, displaying an unwavering compassion that touched countless lives. His generosity extended far beyond his professional life; Thom was a loving father, a witty companion, and a friend to many. He found joy in cooking, drawing, woodworking, and going to the cinema. An avid Detroit Tiger's fan, he could often be found cheering on his favorite team. His military awards showcased his bravery and dedication, including the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, 1 Overseas Service Bar, and the M-14 Sharpshooter Badge. Thom left a profound impact on those around him, and his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those he loved. He was the proud and loving father of Daniel (Mindy) Brown, Kevin (April) Brown, and Bobby (Shelley) Brown. He also leaves behind his siblings Debi (Vic) Day, David Brown, LeAnn (Walter) Harmon, Christopher (Wallissa) Brown, and Ed (Debbie) Brown, and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Jewel Brown. Thom's love for his family was matched only by his love for life itself. Thom's love for his family knew no bounds. In keeping with Thom's spirit, we invite you to share your memories and upload photos to his memorial page. His life was a testament to the power of love, the importance of family, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Let us remember him not for his departure, but for the beautiful life he led, the love he shared, and the lasting impact he made on all of us. A small family service will be held for Thom this fall in the Kansas City area. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, Grand Rapids, 616-452-3006, exclusive providers of Veterans Funeral Care.
