Douglas Ryan Kargel, age 73, of Greenville, formerly of Hale and Taylor, Michigan, passed away Thursday evening, March 2, 2023 at his home under the loving care of his family and Spectrum Health Hospice. The son of Kenneth & Mildred (Schiller) Kargel, he was born on June 11, 1949 in Detroit and was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War serving as a corpsman with the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge he received masters degrees from Eastern Michigan University. Doug worked for the State of Michigan laboratories as a registered clinical pathologist and microbiologist, later he managed and retired from Northern Michigan Health Services laboratory. He enjoyed his hobby farm and working on his muscle cars. On August 8, 1998, in Hale, Michigan, he married Brenda Lee (Gates) Kargel and together they enjoyed nearly 25 years of marriage and in retirement, they made their home in Greenville where Doug delighted in tending to his mini-forest and gardens. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a nephew, Chris. Surviving are his wife, Brenda L. Kargel of Greenville; his daughter, Elizabeth (Lewis) Kargel-Duncan of Frankenmuth; his step-children, Tammy Youmans, and John (Kelly) Larsen, both of Greenville, and Jason (Carrie) Larsen of Lansing; two sisters, Cathy (Howard) Garms of Alanson, and Shirley (Ken) Robinson of West Bloomfield; a brother, Rick Kargel; grandchildren Janessa Duncan, Isabella Larsen, Kathryn Yeomans, and Olivia Youmans; step-granddaughters, Carissa Spetoskey, Kailey Spetoskey, Liz Duncan, and Megan Duncan; siblings-in-law, Nancy (David) Tompsett of Higgins Lake, Roger (Tami) Gates of Greenville, and Julie Lonn of Thompsonville; as well as several neices and nephews.
