Donald Smith

Donald Willard Smith, age 93, of Grand Rapids, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Spectrum Health Nursing & Rehab Center-Fuller Avenue. The son of Willard & Leola (Post) Smith, he was born on January 20, 1923 in Auburn, New York. He left home to attend the University of Cincinnati and interrupted his education to proudly serve his county during World War II in the United States Army. Following the war, he finished his law degree and was admitted to the State of Ohio Bar Association. On July 31, 1954 he married Aline Marie Perron and his career took him to the newly founded Foremost Insurance Company in Grand Rapids where he as an executive and retired with over 30 years of service. Don enjoyed walking and reading. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Joyce Roberts, of Moravia, New York. Surviving are his wife of nearly 62 years, Aline Smith, of Grand Rapids; three children, Carol Smith of Stanton, Willard Smith of Grand Rapids, and Mary Smith-Luther, and her husband Thomas Luther. of Eldersburg, Maryland; and two grandchildren, Roger Luther and Elizabeth Luther; and several nieces and nephews.
