Donald Schuurman

Donald Jay Schuurman, age 66, passed away peacefully on Thursday July 27, with his beloved wife Shelley by his side. He bravely battled multiple myeloma for 5 years. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 43 years, Shelley; his children, Nathan and Jason (Bella); and the joy of his life, his grandchildren, Jacob, Kai and June. Don grew up in Midland Park, NJ, and came to Grand Rapids, MI, to attend Calvin College. He earned his Master's degree in Social Work from Western Michigan University and worked as a counselor with troubled teens and their families at the 17th District Family Court for 27 years. He will be remembered for the compassion he showed to all of his clients. For 38 years he was a faithful member of Church of the Servant CRC. During his illness he was lovingly supported by his group members at Gilda's Club GR. His family will be forever grateful for the compassionate care Don received from Dr. Polavaram and his nurse Sarah from the Cancer and Hematology Center at Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion. Don loved reading, fishing, and brewing beer. He will be fondly remembered for his wry sense of humor, his devotion to his family, his loyalty to his friends, his generosity, and his kindness. And of course, the incredible meals he cooked for family and friends. A celebration of Don's life will be held at Church of the Servant CRC, 3835 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids, 49546, on Saturday, September 9 at 11:00 am. Instead of flowers, donations may be made to Gilda's Club of Grand Rapids. Burial arrangements were entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, Grand Rapids, 616-452-3006.
