Debbie R. Goelman Smith

It is with great love and deep sadness that we announce the passing of Debbie R. Goelman Smith, 61, of Kentwood, Michigan, who left us on August 20, 2025.

Born on September 4, 1963, in Parma Heights, Ohio, to Allan and Marie (Ludwig) Goelman, Debbie lived a life marked by humor, generosity, brilliance, and an unwavering love of family. She poured her creativity and determination into everything she did, always giving more than 100%.

Following high school, Debbie began her studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music in Voice before going on to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in biochemistry and social work at Case Western Reserve University.

She went on to practice as a psychologist in many different settings, including conducting clinical drug trials for psychiatric medications. Even when progressive medical conditions limited her ability to continue practicing, Debbie’s sharp mind and caring heart never dimmed.

Above all, Debbie was devoted to her children, Adam and Lauren. Her love for them was at the very center of her life, guiding everything she did. She delighted in telling stories, sharing her passions, and finding joy in even the smallest of moments.

Her hobbies and collections reflected her wide range of interests and enthusiasm: Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians memorabilia, Coca-Cola collectibles, Fiestaware, dolls, and vintage player piano rolls. At one point, she even took on the unique challenge of restoring player pianos—a testament to her creativity and persistence.

Those who knew Debbie will always remember her warmth, wit, and her tireless spirit. Though she will be deeply missed, her love and laughter will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

The family invites donations in Debbie’s memory to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in place of flowers.
