David James Holcomb, age 68, of Lyons, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly due to heart complications on Monday, November 28, 2022. He was born June 30, 1954, in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late James and Geraldine (Durak) Holcomb. Dave graduated from Everett High School with the class of 1972. On July 5, 1985, he married the love of his life, Rayanne Marie Chamberlain in Colorado Springs, CO.
Following graduation, Dave was fascinated with the new opportunities being offered in computers and he taught himself software programming and how to build effective business computer systems. That became his life's work and he never lost his enthusiasm for the advances made in technology. He worked over fifty years in the computer software business.
Dave spent 20 years working a dog in missing persons response and was a Founding Member of Michigan Search and Rescue. He certified two dogs for wilderness response and responded for many searches throughout his career, helping to reunite families. He was also one of the originators of the Michigan Professional Search and Rescue Council, an organization dedicated to ensuring that search and rescue response in Michigan has met an effective standard. Dave strongly encouraged and supported his wife's dream and goals to certify her dogs with FEMA and that carried over to his team members, teaching them everything he knew and encouraging them to pass on that knowledge.
Dave's greatest gift, though, was his ability to instantly become friends with anyone he met. He could sit down next to anyone and within minutes be involved in a conversation. His stories were legendary since he could make the most mundane things interesting and exciting. Dave was also one of those lucky people who had lifetime friends, the Riff-Raff, a group of guys that remained close since high school.
Dave is survived by his wife of 37 years, Rayanne; his brothers, Mike and Dan (Nancy); nephews, Ben and Luke; nieces, Carly and Vicky; and his beloved search dog in training, Kali.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Larry.
Per Dave's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service is being planned and details will be posted when they become available.
Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, Grand Rapids, 616-452-3006.
