Dear Ba Ngoai,When Mommy brought you home over 10 years ago to our old house in Santa Clara and said you would be living with us, I had no idea the tremendous impact you would have on our lives. You have helped raised Tiffany, Christina, and me from young girls to proper intelligent women.
Even though you felt limited by your ability to speak English, you tried your hardest to communicate with us. Thanks to you, Tiffany, Christina, and I were encouraged to practice Vietnamese at home, whether we liked it or not. You helped us hold on to our heritage as a living piece of our family generational history.
I remember every time Christina would walk home from Garden Gate that you would stand outside to make sure that she was safe when she crossed the street. That's over 180 times that you went outside to make sure that chubby little girl would make it home safely.
Your bright pink slippers, tube of Mentos, and sweet Chanel perfume are a few things that will remind me of you, as well as your com chien. No one can make com chien as yummy as you. I'm so glad I got to watch you make it the last time you were home. After seeing how much oil you put in the recipe, I can see why it is so yummy.
I will never forget the day that you passed your American Citizenship test. All of your hard work had finally paid off as you tried to feel at home in this strange new country. Please know that there was never a need for you to feel like you belong, because you will always be part of our family. Tiffany, Christina, and I love you from the bottom of our hearts.
We, your grandchildren (Jennifer, Tiffany and Christina in California), love you!
