Chery Jean (Rollston) Sturgis, 81, of The Villages, FL, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, at Briarwood Assisted Living in Allegan, MI. She was born on September 9, 1944, in Muskegon, MI, to the late Bernard and Donna (Swartz) Rollston and stepdaughter to the late John Nienhuis. She spent her childhood years in Muskegon, MI, and was a graduate of Muskegon High School’s class of 1962.

In 1965, she met her husband of 58 loving years, Dennis Sturgis, in the Mozart Gardens in Vienna, Austria. They were later married on September 2, 1967, at which time she became a lifelong resident of Allegan, MI. She was a loving mother to her children: Michelle (Clair) Greenway and Kevin (Toni) Sturgis. Her greatest joy was as a grandmother to her grandchildren: Ryanne (Nathan) Simmons, Nathan Greenway, Emily, and Parker Sturgis.

Cheryl received her undergraduate degree in Education at Hope College, followed by a Master’s in Education from Western Michigan University. Her education set the foundation for a long and successful career as an elementary school teacher with Allegan Public Schools. For 36 years, Cheryl’s teaching allowed every student to feel seen and heard. Her life was a testament to the profound impact a dedicated teacher had on generations of students. Her wisdom, patience, and kindness shaped not just

students, but the very fabric of her community.

She enjoyed spending her summers and breaks traveling. Lasting memories were made during her travels with both family and friends. It wasn’t uncommon to hear “Hi, Mrs. Sturgis” when she happened upon a prior student during her travels both within the US and abroad.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, her children, and her grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Paul (Linda) Sturgis, special cousins, Lynda MacLean, Sandy Hooker, and Carole Scott, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and stepfather, Cheryl is preceded in death by her stepbrother, Chet (Fern) Nienhuis, stepsister, Priscilla (Bill) VanDam, sister-in-law, Dawn (Jim) Pullen, and special cousin, Margaret Hart.

Cheryl touched the lives of those who had the honor of knowing her. Her selflessness, warmth, and kindness will be remembered. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and compassion that lives on in all of us.

Cremation has taken place. Per her request, her life will be honored and celebrated in a private family ceremony.
