Cheryl A. Shapiro, R.N., age 64, of Greenville, passed away Monday, July 29, 2024 at her home under the loving care of her family and Corewell Health Hospice. The daughter of George Donald “Don” & Violet “Sylvia” (Westerinen) Paselk, she was born on April 5, 1960 in Mount Clemens, Michigan and spent her formative years in Southern California.
In 1973, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior, a moment that brought her a sense of freedom and led to a life of contentment.
On August 11, 1979, she married Joel S. Shapiro and together they raised four children across nearly 45 years of marriage. After homeschooling their children, Cheryl earned her Associates Degree in Nursing from Montcalm Community College and her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Ferris State University. For over 20 years, she worked as a nurse for the former Spectrum Health (now Corewell Health), ending her career as a hospice nurse providing compassionate and calming end-of-life care to more than 1,400 patients and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Gary Paselk; a nephew, Andy Paselk; and a special “daughter,” Sara Capman.
Surviving are her husband, Joel Shapiro; their children, Randi Shapiro, Daniel Shapiro & Aubrey Poppen, Michael & Beth Shapiro, and Seth & Jenna Shapiro; a special “son,” Stonne Capman; ten grandchildren, Xander, Haven, Evie, Ruthie, Ione, Azriel, Rory, Melody, Cora, and Ezra; a brother, Steve & Candy Paselk; a sister, Linda & Ron Russel; two nieces and two nephews, Stephanie & Les Davidson, Tamra Paselk, Josh & Christy Paselk, and Brady & Heidi Paselk; and many beloved cousins, friends, and co-workers.
Cheryl was indomitable and tireless in her care for family and friends, quick to crack a joke and express her love practically. She was inclusive and loving to her children and their partners as well as special friends who became family. “Yaya” to her grandchildren, she was a joyful and devoted grandmother, scouring yard sales for toys to make them smile.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Cheryl's life beginning at 1:00 p.m. with light refreshments and fellowship on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at Encounter Community Church, 1213 West State Street, Belding, Michigan 48809 (just off of Highway M-44 behind the Corewell Health-Belding Family Medicine building), where ceremonies will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Instead of flowers, Cheryl would have appreciated contributions in her memory to Great Lakes Bay Health Centers and/or Hand2Hand.
