Charles Patrick McHugh (Chuck), age 76, of Chippewa Lake, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, with his family by his side. The son of John Bernard and Doris Lee (Jackman) McHugh, he was born on December 18,1949 in Florence, Alabama. Chuck was a proud United States Army veteran, attaining the rank of Seargent during the Vietnam Era. On April 23, 1994, in Mason, Michigan, he married Shelly Lee Fenwick Richardson, and together they enjoyed over 32 years of marriage.
Chuck was raised at Eaton Rapids at the V.F.W. NATIONAL HOME along with his sisters and brother. He was a skilled tradesman “Die Try-out” at General Motors Plant 3 in Lansing, retiring after thirty-three years. He enjoyed spending time with his family most of all. He loved hunting and fishing and teaching his sons and grandsons the fundamentals of both. He relished being on the lake, taking the kids tubing and rewarding them with ice cream with every ride. He would get a kick out of riding his 4-wheeler around the neighborhood and visiting with everyone outside. There are no words to describe his love and generosity to everyone he knew, and he never met a stranger. The memory of his lust for life will live on in his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his niece, Kathy Mae Johns, his great niece, Corrye Elizabeth Minges, and nephew, John McHugh.
Surviving are his wife, Shelly Lee McHugh, and their very blended family. Their children, Steven McHugh, David (Ginger) McHugh, Marc McHugh, Laura Richardson, Ryan Richardson, Kristopher (Heather) Richardson. Their grandchildren Beth Cocco, John York, Thomas York, Dylan Richardson, Brandon (Aubrie) Richardson, Rianna (Derrick) Richardson, Zachary Berger, Rebekah Donahue, Makenna (Jacob) Richardson, Miyah (Keshia) Donahue, Madelyn (Dayden) Richardson, Aiden Richardson, Keira McHugh, Rourke (D.J.) Donahue, Samantha (Kevin) Richardson, Isabella McHugh, and Liam McHugh. Blessed with great-grandchildren, Adelyn Fuentes, Dahlia Fuentes, Wendell Bennington. And another blessing to be born in December, Miss Charlie Grace Grissom. He is also survived by his sister Mary Sue (J.D.) Cochran, sister Kathleen (Jack) Richardson, and brother John (Patty) McHugh and many loving nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life for Chuck will be on July 18th 2026 at 1pm at the Big Rapids Eagles Aerie 2535 (18361 16 Mile Road, Big Rapids) with Military Honors at 1:30.
