Carmen Florence (Lapid) Turkington, age 87, of Royal Oak, Michigan, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on Saturday, December 11, 2021. She was born March 6, 1934, in Detroit, MI to the late Vincent and Mabel (Ballard) Lapid. Carmen married the love of her life, William Adam Turkington on March 1, 1952. Together they raised their three children and celebrated 54 years of marriage, before Bill passed away on May 12, 2006.
Carmen was a long-time resident of Royal Oak, MI. She was an avid writer of letters and cards, as evidenced by her over 200 pen pals. She always made you feel special by never missing a birthday, be it human or pet. Everyone looked forward to receiving her cards and letters as they were adorned with multiple stickers, inside and out. Music and grandchildren were her passions. She found her way back to the Salvation Army in Dearborn, attending every Sunday. And finally, she never met a Facebook post she didn't "like!"
Survivors include her three children, Bill (Debra) Turkington, Phil Turkington, and Shelly (John) Sichta; grandchildren, Lindsey, Lauren, Sean, Maddy, Lindsay (Brian) Highstreet, and Ryan (Shelby) Sichta; and great grandchildren, Mason, Marlee, Cameron, and Marielle.
Cremation has taken place and no formal services will be held at this time. In memory of Carmen, donations can be made to Crash's Landing (www.crashslanding.org) or the Salvation Army (www.salvationarmyusa.org).
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Heather Hills Care Center and Kindred Hospice for helping them throughout this difficult time.
Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, Grand Rapids, 616-452-3006.
