Boyd Machiele

Boyd Machiele passed away peacefully on June 1, 2022 in Zeeland, MI in his home surrounded by his daughters and grandchildren. Boyd was suffering with various health ailments, although that didn't slow him down much. Boyd remained hopeful, full of spunk and humor throughout his journey. It brings his family much peace knowing that he is no longer in pain and is taking all the walks he wants now. Boyd was born on July 31, 1945, to Richard and Bertha Machiele in Grand Rapids, MI. He grew up in Zeeland, MI with his two brothers, Dick and Ron Machiele. Boyd enjoyed being outdoors and taking trips to Michigan State University with his father whenever he was able. Boyd graduated from Zeeland High School in 1963. In 1966, when Boyd was 20 years old, he was drafted to the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. Boyd's time in the Army inspired him to become involved in the medical field. Boyd re-enlisted and worked as a medic throughout his 4 years in the Army. He was stationed in Germany, Alabama, and Texas. Boyd's time abroad influenced many of his later interests. Boyd had an incredible zest for life and was drawn to many different professions. Boyd graduated from Grand Valley State University with his associate degree in Radiology. He worked as an X-Ray Technician at Zeeland Hospital before transitioning to medical sales. Boyd's boisterous and kind-natured personality helped him to succeed in the sale industry. He worked for many different companies including Proctor & Gamble. Boyd loved animals and dogs. Boyd started his own dog training company, Burdock Working Terriers. Boyd trained dogs and earned many awards and accolades with his dog, Hooker. Boyd ended his career when he retired from the Holland Bus Company. In Boyd's later years, he enjoyed traveling and was known for cruising on the backroads listening to his favorite music. Boyd's sense of humor and adventurousness brought him to many different locations. He loved stopping into new places and made friends wherever he went. He loved a party, and there's surely one heck of one going on in heaven after his arrival. Boyd had many hobbies such as fishing, antiquing, reading, golfing, collecting, and drinking cold beer. Boyd is survived by his three daughters, Tami (Kevin) Hoezee, Tanja DeGraaf & Tara (Kenny) Kudsin, and his three grandchildren, Sierra Kudsin, Ashton and Autumn DeGraaf. Boyd's legacy will live on through the values that he instilled in his family and friends such as cherishing the little moments, laughing during hardships, and to take the backroads whenever you can because life is about the journey, not the destination. Per Boyd's wishes, his family will be hosting a Celebration of Life at his favorite local watering hole, The American Legion, at a later date. Although Boyd's loss is one that is felt by many, we look to his wisdom during difficult times. When you're having a hard time seeing the light in the darkness, we hope you hear Boyd rooting you on to "always look on the sunny side".
