Benjamin Tony Vegter, age 77, of Byron Center, passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 at Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods. The son of Peiter & Reinje (Huizinga) Vegter, he was born on April 26, 1933 in the Netherlands. After immigrating to America, Ben proudly served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Sennat Steel and was a member of the Valley City American Legion Post 356 and Woodhaven Reformed Church. Surviving are his wife, Irene (Shoemaker) Vegter; their son, Jeff (Carol) Vegter; two granddaughters, Erin and Marissa Vegter; a sister, Grace Kamps; siblings-in-law, Eugene (Darlene) Shoemaker, Mary Jane (Howard) Goorhouse, Virginia (Vern) Salmon, and Vita (Norman) Pepper; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation is on Monday from 6-8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. at Woodhaven Reformed Church, 3959 68th Street S.W., Byron Center, where funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be directed to Faith Hospice. Pastor Steve Petroelje will officiate and burial will take place privately at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta.
