Barbara Throop

August 28, 1932 — May 29, 2021

Barbara Ellen Throop, age 88, was a life-long resident of Lansing. With her family at her side, she went peacefully to be with her lord May 29,2021. Barb was born to the late Harper and Ellen Stephens. She was very proud to be a 3rd generation Spartan Alum and also retired from Michigan State University's Dept of Anatomy. Her lifelong passions were reading, sewing (a gifted seamstress), gardening, canning, quilting, knitting, crocheting and weaving. She was an avid traveler - visiting most of the U.S and its national parks, Europe, Thailand, Iceland and Siberia. She particularly enjoyed a couple of summers working at an Etruscan archaeology dig in central Italy. During her 50's and 60's became an avid bicyclist (who "Biked the Dike" in the Netherlands) and a dedicated jogger -- running in many 5K races for charity. Barb's neighbors knew her as a dedicated morning walker - come snow, rain or shine. She loved to dance-- particularly with the L. A. Cloggers, where they danced at community centers and senior living establishments. She will always be remembered as a giver of her skills and time, loving caregiver to many, and sharer of her passions with others. Barb had one of those special smiles that warmed the hearts of all she met. Preceded in death by husband Charles Throop and brother James. She is survived by siblings Sylvia Abbott, Julie (Mike) Parker, Mark (Terry) Stephens and sister in-law Judy Stephens, son Robin (Sharron) Frucci, Granddaughters Anissa (Mike) McLaughlin and Kristin (Mike) Nidey who were the "apple of her eye" and 5 great grandchildren - Connor, Bobbi, Samantha, Wilbur and Leo. Barb is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews; in particular her favorite cousins -- Terry Chapman, Mike (Chris) Chapman and Rick Chapman, whose love, support and skills she relied upon so many times. She was an active member of Delta Mills United Methodist Church, its choir and served as its treasurer for many years. A special thanks goes out to Pastor Joe and his wife Nona for the ministerial guidance and many rides they provided; and to the Alan (Linda) Blankenship family for their support and friendship; as well to all of Barb's church and crafting friends over the many years. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no services. Donations in her memory may be made to Delta Mills United Methodist Church of Lansing. Ml. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, Grand Rapids, 616-452-3006.
