Barbara Scott

April 6, 1924 — January 2, 2021

Barbara R. Scott, 96, of Birmingham, MI, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021, at Holland Home Breton Extended Care in Kentwood, MI. She was born on April 6, 1924, in Detroit, MI to Howard and Mabel Reid. Barb was married to the love of her life, Stewart C. Scott DDS, who preceded her in death on October 6, 1998. Her parents and family were members of the First Baptist Church in Birmingham, MI. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister whose memory will be cherished forevermore. She leaves behind her six children, Cindy (Glenn) Scott of Lexington, NC; Val McMurray of Kentwood, MI; Reid (Darcy) Scott of Bloomfield Hills, MI; Mitch (Nancy) Scott of Grifton, NC; Jody Vant Hul of Grand Rapids, MI; and Kirk (Tracie) Scott of Bloomfield Hills, MI; along with 12 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Barb's role as mother and grandmother was by far her greatest achievement, leaving a legacy of love and support that will carry us all forward. She was a true example of how to live a rich, adventurous and full life. Barbara Scott was a lifelong learner. At age 29, she dropped out of Eastern Michigan University after her first baby boy arrived and her husband graduated from U of M dental school. Twenty years later, she finished her undergraduate degree. The "teacher" in her could be seen in the joy she found in substituting in the public schools, directing Sunday school, and serving as a docent at Fredrick Meijer Gardens. The "artist" in her enabled her to enjoy her passion and gift for interior decorating, painting, and performing at the Cheboygan Follies. Well into her 80's, she still enjoyed skiing, golfing and/or boating with family. A private family service will be held at a later date. There will be no formal visitation or viewing. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, Grand Rapids, 616-452-3006.
