Barbara Phelps

Barbara Elaine (Weerts) Phelps was born on March 17, 1942, in Fairbury, Illinois, USA, to Harvey and Claire Weerts. She passed away on October 12, 2023, in Hudsonville, Michigan, where she had resided for the past 11 years. Barbara was an adventurous spirit, independent and driven. She was a creative soul who found joy in crafting, sewing, and storytelling. Her loving and fun nature made her a dearly loved member of her family and community, and her scientific and compassionate mind led her to a fulfilling career in physical therapy. Barbara graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University and the Mayo Clinic School of Physical Therapy before working at Kankakee State Hospital and Riverside Hospital. She later launched her own private practice in Clifton, Illinois. She was a respected professional in her field until her retirement in 1998. After retirement, Barbara continued to invest her time and energy in her hobbies. She was a talented piano player, an avid reader, and an active member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. Barbara served in the choir, small groups, and music committee, sharing her love for music and her faith with others. Barbara also devoted her time to the 4H club, nurturing the next generation's love for learning and creativity. Barbara was a loving mother to her daughter, Elizabeth (Corey) Mettler and a doting grandmother to Andrew (Stephanie) Mettler, Anna (Joseph) Beute, Joshua Mettler, and Caleb Mettler. She is also survived by her brother, Kenneth (Myrna) Weerts; her nephews, Dan (Denise) Weerts and David Weerts; niece, Julie Weerts; an aunt; and several cousins. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Claire Weerts. Those who knew Barbara will remember her as a woman of strength, love, and faith. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Graceland Cemetery in Fairbury, Illinois.
