Barbara Jean Dickinson, age 75, of Greenville, passed away Wednesday evening, Jan. 12, 2011 at her home following a brief illness. The daughter of Alvin & Stella (Scofield) Matthews, she was born on April 26, 1935 near Greenville. At the age of 16 she began working at McClellans Dime Store in downtown Greenville and continued there for 18 years until hiring in to the former Gibson Refrigerator Company where she retired in 1996. A devoted mother, Barbara also was an avid reader, enjoyed yard work, gardening, crossword and sudoko puzzles and was still active in league bowling. She had been a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Lester J. Sitts Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5065 in Sheridan. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Edward Matthews; a sister, Ivadell Snyder; and a brother, Roy Matthews. Surviving are her children, Donna & L.B. Boyce of Greenville, Tony & Tracy Dickinson of Gowen, and Terry & Geri Dickinson of Orleans; her former husband, Erwin Bud Dickinson of Greenville; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Sawdy of Sheridan and Elsie Cesar of Greenville; two brothers, Loyal & Jana Matthews of Delaware and Wilbur & Doreene Matthews of Cedar Springs; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation with the family is on Monday from 5-6 p.m. at the Christiansen Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 511 S.
