Amy Josephine Thornton, age 76, of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Thursday May 31, 2018 surrounded by family.
The daughter of Guy & Ethel (Player) Thornton, she was born on September 27, 1941 in Columbus, GA.
Amy grew up to be a true Georgia Peach. After graduating with the Class of '59 from Baker High School, she married Tom Smith of Saranac, MI. They had two sons, Tom & Bill. Amy would be married again to a Craig Starkweather of Lowell, MI, and have two daughters, Roxanne & Suzanne.
Amy worked for the State of Michigan as the main director for Kent County CAP/CETA organization, as a member of the Michigan Employment Security Commission, and as an intake processor for the Riverside Correctional Facility. Upon retiring from the State, she opened a daycare facility and became the "Grandma" to a couple of generations of kids throughout the Lowell area.
Amy is survived by her four children Tom Smith & Araceli Hernandez, Bill & Cindy Smith, Roxanne Sokoloski, and Suzanne & Dan O'Connor. Her grandchildren Jason, Shawn, Colin, and their mother Eriko, Tami, Nicholas, and their father Tom, Robbie, Cory, Cassie, Ryan, Sean, Sebastian, Jenna and Julie. Amy's 10 great-grandchildren as well as her brother George & Beth Thornton.
Visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at the Church of the Nazarene, 201 N. Washington, Lowell. A graveside service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at Oakwood Cemetery.
