Alvin Jay Johnston, 81, passed away on August 22, 2026, at his home in Wyoming, Michigan.

Known to those close to him as Al or Papa, he was born on August 15, 1945, in Bailey, Michigan, to Leroy and Marvel Johnston.  He was preceded in death by his wife Jill Johnston, his parents Leroy and Marvel Johnston, and his siblings Dolores Ida, and Charles Leroy.

Al worked for GM–Oldsmobile for a decade before beginning a career of more than 30 years with Gibson/Electrolux. Outside of work, he could fix just about anything with an engine, from motorbikes and lawn mowers to tractors and cars. Self-taught and determined, he turned to his reference books whenever a repair presented a challenge. It wasn’t unusual to find books piled nearby and a kitchen table covered with greased parts waiting to be put back together.

He also loved woodworking. He designed and built tables and wardrobes, and spent years building, remodeling, and expanding the family home. Al shared his skills freely, helping family and friends hang drywall and siding, pour cement, and even raise a roof or two.

Al enjoyed long Sunday drives through the countryside, watching the farms change with the seasons. Those drives often ended with supper at Cracker Barrel.

He is survived by his children, Lisa, Deb, Diane, Chris (Becky), Scott (Paige), and R’Shelle (Dan); his siblings, Elizabeth Jones (Ron), Patricia Adams, Jerry Johnston (Bonnie), and Wanda Mutschler (Denny); and an extended, blended family that includes many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
