Allan R. Baughman, age 94, of Greenville, formerly of Muskegon, Michigan passed away early Thursday morning, February 15, 2024 at his home under the loving care of his family, very special caregiver Kathaleen and Hospice.
The son of Raymond & Doris (Scriver) Baughman, he was born on April 25, 1929 in Muskegon, Michigan and graduated from Muskegon High School. On August 17, 1951, in Muskegon, he married Marianne and together they enjoyed almost 64 years of marriage and raised four children. Allan was preceded in death by Marianne, parents Raymond & Doris, stepmother Ilse, sister Crystal and grandson Jeffery Eric Baughman, and many other close family members.
Allan and Marianne eventually made their home at Little Blue Lake near Greenville. Some of Allan's passions included casinos, jigsaw puzzles, Detroit Red Wings, Lions and Tigers, but most of all, his children and grandchildren. Allan lived a long life full of amazing adventures. He had two favorite stories that he would share with anyone who would listen.
In the spring of 1946 (at age 17), Allan saw Doris Day sing with the Les Brown Orchestra in Muskegon. During a break, Doris was having a Coke, and when she had to go back to perform, Allan asked if he could have her Coke bottle. She gave it to him to finish and that bottle remained one of his most cherished possessions.
Allan proudly served in the US Army from 1948-1950 rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He wanted to be assigned to the Signal Corp, but when asked if anyone played an instrument, Allan indicated that he was a drummer. To his surprise, he passed the audition and was sent to Tokyo, Japan to join General Douglas MacArthur’s GHQ 293rd Marching Band. He was blessed and honored to serve in that way.
After Allan's military service, he was employed as an accountant at Michigan Associated Telephone Co. (GTE) In 1955 he joined the staff of Vandervelde's Furniture doing their advertising, advancing to Assistant Manager, General Manager and retired in 1993 as a partner in the store.
Surviving are his four children: Kathy Krentz of Muskegon and Arizona, Eric "Rick" (Mary Ann) Baughman of Coldwater, David Baughman of Greenville, and Michael (Susan) Baughman of Hudsonville, eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
