Alger L. Johnson, age 102, formerly of Greenville, passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 24, 2009 at Clark Retirement Community in Grand Rapids. The son of William & Mary (Healy) Johnson, he was born at home on Feb. 16, 1907 near Edmore.
On November 12, 1931, in Greenville, he married the former Dorothy M. Clark. Together, they made raised three children and were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church in Greenville.
For over 30 years Alger worked for the Prudential Insurance Company, managing the Greenville office until his retirement. A life long antique collector, in retirement Alger owned and operated Countryside Antiques.
He also had been a member of the Knights of Pythias, was past president and a member of the Greenville Board of Education, and helped organize the first Danish Festival.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sisters; four brothers, Earl, Leo, Wayne, & Harold Johnson; two sisters, Eva McFarland and Alta Evans; and his wife of 62 years, Dorothy M. Johnson.
Surviving are his children, Evelyn & Ferris Larsen of Madisonville, Kentucky, Karen & Roger Canzano of Rochester, Robert & Barbara Johnson of Buchanan; thirteen grandchildren, Tim Larsen, Beth McCord, Wendy Lamb, Amy Lynch, Pamela Clark, Terry French, Curtis Johnson, Tracy Donati, Tammy Johnson, Roger Canzano Jr., Christian Canzano, Jason Canzano; nineteen great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews
Memorial services will be held next Sunday, July 5, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from the chapel of the Clark Retirement Community, Grand Rapids, with Chaplain Cathy Rafferty officiating.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Clark Retirement Community, 1551 Franklin Street SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506. Final interment will be in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding.
